Original Lehment Rostocker – „Wat trink wi nu? Mann un Fru!“
Tradition says that around 1700 a stately merchant and his no less stately wife offered a fine and delicious Doppel-Kümmel (caraway-flavoured schnapps) speciality at the markets in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which bore the name “Mann un Fru” (“Man and Wife”).
A century and a half later, the Rostock distiller and young businessman Conrad Lehment took up exactly this traditional recipe, refined it and produced this schnapps in the schnapps distillery in Rostock that was specifically acquired for this purpose in 1864. Even today this is still regarded as the “birthplace” of Original Lehment Rostocker Doppel-Kümmel. The energetic founder Conrad Lehment and his son Ernst Lehment quickly recognised the potential and made the Original Lehment Rostocker Doppel-Kümmel known beyond the closer homeland. The blue-capped bottles with the peasant couple “Mann un Fru” thereby started their journey in all parts of the country.
And even today the Original Lehment Rostocker Doppel-Kümmel is still produced unchanged according to the old recipe from merchant Conrad Lehment. In addition to Original Lehment Rostocker Doppel-Kümmel there is also “Original Lehment Rostocker Aquavit”.
Back then as well as today, “Mann un Fru” appear in historic maritime costume and are the distinct trademark for products of the brand Original Lehment Rostocker.
The following toast is as unmistakable as the brand: “Wat trink wi nu? Mann un Fru!” (In dialect: “What are we drinking now? Man and Wife!”).
