In 1598, Ambrosien Vermöllen founded Germany’s oldest liqueur factory, which later became famous as “Der Lachs”. His most famous invention, Original Danziger Goldwasser, followed in 1606. Made with real 22-carat gold leaf, the product quickly earned a reputation as a noble social drink. No wonder that Original Danziger Goldwasser became the favorite liqueur of the legendary Russian Czars Peter and Catherine the Great. The fascination surrounding Original Danziger Goldwasser and the illustrious history of the Der Lachs house continue to this day. But where does the name, which means “the salmon” in German, come from? The answer to the mystery dates back to 1704, when the Vermöllen family moved into a new house in a respectable middle-class building on Breitengasse in Gdańsk (Danzig in German). As was customary in those days, the building had a symbol carved above the front door instead of an address. On the Vermöllen’s new house, the symbol was a salmon. To this day, the fascination of drinkable gold remains unchanged – as does the recipe for Original Danziger Goldwasser, which is still made using the traditional recipe and centuries-old tradition. Original Danziger Goldwasser is one of the oldest brands in Germany.
